Mercantilism Essay -- essays research papers

The year 1607 carried England into the "New World" with its first perpetual settlement at Jamestown, and the next years would carry progressively American provinces to the British Empire. When sending individuals into the new land, the English wanted to utilize a mercantilist arrangement and completely utilize the provinces for their assets. The homesteader's formation of the maxim "Mother nations exist to assist their colonies" is adequate on the grounds that England's unique goals of mercantilism before long vanished after their passage into this new world. The explanation behind the decrease in their thought processes can be followed to numerous events, most prominently considerate disregard of the states and inside English clashes. Much of the time, the motherland was helping out the states than the settlements were for their country. Other than offering them security and giving them a larger number of rights than the Englishmen, England additi onally ensured the settlers a market to sell items.      The English had outstanding amongst other maritime powers on the planet and because of being under British control; the states likewise had the benefit of having an incredible naval force. A similar arrangement went for ground troops, the homesteaders were given security from the French and Indians without preparing an enormous armed force. English redcoats were prepared in England and sent to secure pioneers in America. As expressed by Dean Tucker in â€Å"Dean Tucker Advises a Divorce†, pilgrim security put serious weight on the English treasury. 300,000 to 400,000 pounds a year were spent on ensuring settlements. Adam Smith likewise contacts this subject in â€Å"Adam Smith Criticizes Empire†. Smith contends that because of sending British soldiers to America during wars, England lost a huge amount of cash. This shows as a rule the English were in actuality working for the states, despite the fact that the head of mer cantilism shows the inverse. Not at all like those that really lived in England and needed to pay enormous aggregates of cash to help the military, the pilgrims got assurance for nothing.      Although the Navigation Acts presented on the settlers hurt a few, for some, it would mean budgetary strength. Ranchers in South Carolina and Virginia had the benefit of overwhelming tobacco development. Simultaneously, center settlements had prolific soil making it a decent land for grain. Others, for example, Massachuset... ... advantage their country, and in Spain’s case that was unquestionably evident. France had comparable expectations, yet to a lighter degree. France incredibly utilized their states for crude materials, for example, hide. These hide hats’ extraordinary notoriety in France brought about enormous benefits for the nation. Mercantilism assumed an enormous job in pioneer settlements, and its influences are still observed today. Numerous defensive taxes are put to offer laborers security. Albeit exacting strategies are not, at this point authorized, instances of mercantilism are as yet obvious.      Although the two sides picked up just as lost in the relationship, the pioneers profited the most. In addition to the fact that they received free assurance, yet additionally they had a greater number of rights than Englishmen and had an ensured market to sell items. Along these lines, it is workable for the pioneers to invert the saying. Thusly, it’s similarly as obvious as the first articulation. Mercantilism declined, yet just in America. Different countries kept utilizing the strategy and much of the time it can at present be seen today. Mercantilism assumed a huge job in molding America, and despite the fact that its goals were not totally effective, America would not be the equivalent without it.

Psychographics How big data is watching you

Have you ever approved a website cookie to monitor your online behavior, or downloaded a mobile application and allowed it to access personal data on your phone? Most likely you have. But havent you ever wondered what kind of information your digital trail leaves behind and how this data is being used? This article will reveal the digital influencers new secret weapon–coined  Psychographics–and how easily accessible online data is being used to psychologically influence your behavior in both the online and offline space. Psychographics The term Psychographics refers to a quantitative method to describe and segment consumers on the basis of psychological attributes such as behavioral preferences, personality, beliefs, opinions, interest, attitudes, values, and to some extent habits and lifestyles. An individual’s psychographic profile can be inferred, to an accurate level, from the data one leaves behind when surfing online, engaging on a social media site, making an online purchase or using a mobile application. Using linear regression techniques, algorithms can predict psychological traits and states of individual users and thus tailor messages, web designs, background colors, and products on the fly to match individual needs. Google knows you better than you know yourself   Search engines, online platforms, and mobile applications collect a tremendous amount of data about their users. Not only do these platforms collect information about the devices and applications you use, but also a lot of (real-time) personal information about you (e.g. voice and visual data, biometrics, personal characteristics) and the data stored on your mobile phone (e.g. phone numbers, call history, private messages, social media likes). They also monitor your behavior online, carefully tracking the time you spend on sites, the locations you have visited, the reviews you leave behind, and even the payments you make. The online collection of demographic data (e.g. gender, age, income, nationality) and behavioral data (e.g. online purchasing behavior, clicks, likes), together with psychographic profiling, provide these platforms with highly detailed insights about their users and razor-sharp abilities to accurately predict (predictive analytics) and influence behavior online (targeted actions). Digital platforms now not only know  Ã¢â‚¬Ëœwho’  you are and  Ã¢â‚¬Ëœwhat’  you do, but with psychographics can also explain  Ã¢â‚¬Ëœwhy’  you do it. Benefits of using Psychographics to improve performance Reading the above, you now understand that psychographic information can be used to create predictive tools, optimize online services, and effectively target consumers. The following will provide examples of how psychographics are currently being used in real-life applications. Predicting (future) product choice Choice prediction makes use of complex algorithms to analyze consumer data to predict life situations, psychological traits, and product matches. Using predictive analytics, new products are presented to people matching predefined customer profiles based on historical data. A great example of a company making effective use of product choice prediction is U.S. retail company Target. Using demographic and psychographic data, search queries and historical product purchase patterns of existing consumers, Target is able to predict current life situations of existing customers. Based on the above-mentioned data, one specific life situation Target can predict is whether a female customer is pregnant (and more precisely, in which stage of the pregnancy cycle she is in), allowing the company to target  specific products  to the  precise people  at the  right time. Political campaign effectiveness Psychographic data analysis can also be used to influence attitudes and beliefs, potentially swaying voting decisions. Using segmentation data based on demographic, geographic and psychographic data, highly differentiated target groups can be identified (e.g. location, ethnicity, beliefs, opinions, current sentiments, biggest fears), which are then contacted using tailored messages to improve communication effectiveness. Moreover, standardized media campaigns and communication messages can also be automatically adjusted to match the belief systems, motivations and fears of its target audience, allowing for different variations of the same communication (e.g. email campaign, news article) to reach a single household fitting the exact beliefs and motivations of each family member. It is believed that the company Cambridge Analytica supported the 2015 Brexit campaign in the UK and the 2016 U.S. presidential elections by providing behavioral insights based on psychographic data to increase political campaign effectiveness. Personality-based advertising campaigns Research by Sandra Matz and colleagues (2016) from the Psychometrics Centre at Cambridge University suggest in their article  Ã¢â‚¬ËœMoney Buys Happiness if Spending Fits our Personality’  that creating advertising campaigns (product and design) which match consumers’ most dominant personality traits, can increase online conversion rates of campaigns. Moreover, according to the article, purchasing products which fit one’s personality has been found to increase happiness. A great example of such a personality-based advertising campaign is that of Hilton Honors. Hilton developed a mobile app for Facebook called Holiday MatchMaker, which personalizes messages to its users based on personality types and lifestyle preferences inferred from social media likes or mini personality quizzes. Media reported that the Hilton app improved higher click-through rates and online sharing of targeted posts compared to conventional online marketing campaigns. Crime management In the movie ‘Minority Report’ people are arrested for future crimes which havent taken place yet. Sounds pretty Sci-Fi, doesn’t it? Well, guess what, recent advancements in predictive analytics have made it more probable that the future arrest of Howard Marks’ could happen very soon. Police and intelligence forces around the world have started to use artificial intelligence to predict the likelihood of crime offenders recommitting a crime. Using various data points (e.g. national historical data of criminal offenders, demographic data, psychographics and crime severity), algorithms are used to aid jail sentencing and parole decision-making. In the spring of 2017, Eric L. Loomis was sentenced to six years in jail, based in part on a predictive analytical crime management system called  Compas,  created by U.S. company  Northpointe. Equally interesting to mention is an online platform to identify crime-based danger zones in a city. Using predictive analytics,  rio.crimeradar.org  predicts potential crime hotspots in the city of Rio de Janeiro (one of the world’s most dangerous cities). It is probable that in the near future national security organizations will use more advanced algorithms to enable improved prescriptive crime-preventing decisions. Healthcare precision An increasing number of insurance companies and healthcare providers are using psychographics and artificial intelligence to improve diagnostics, advance precision treatment therapies, predict/promote positive health-behaviors and predict/minimize the occurrence of potential health conditions. In the UK, the NHS uses Google’s  DeepMind  program to help healthcare professionals improve early disease detection and improve treatment decisions using big data and predictive analytics. Insurance companies, on the other hand, use predictive analytics to better align insurance premiums with specific risk profiles.  Confused.com  is an example of an online insurance company which uses psychographic data to predict the likelihood of a first-time car insurance taker to have an accident. One of the algorithm’s indicators of risk is personality, which is used to calculate the premium to be paid for a first-time car insurance. For example, it is considered that a highly conscientious first-time driver is less likely to have a car accident than other personality types. How Literacy Practices And Literacy Underlife Are Shaped...

Adolescence is a trying time when one struggles to gain independence while still under authority, understand one’s roles in an unforgiving hierarchy, and still find a way to form an identity. With all of this it’s no wonder that one later looks back on the adolescent years with bittersweet nostalgia. However, it also brings to mind the influences that shape us at this critical point in time. While reading the case studies in Margaret Finders’ Just Girls: Hidden Literacies and Life in Junior High, I was struck with the realization that in my middle school and early high school years I was what Finders referred to as a tough cookie. Which lead to an important question, did my own literacy practices shape my identity or did my identity shape my literary practices? In this paper I will explore how literacy practices and literacy underlife are shaped by the processes in which adolescents build their identities. Beginning with Just Girls, Finders first explores sociocultural perspectives, more specifically gender roles and the hierarchy found in schools. Finders cites that there is a shift and change occurring when one enters junior high, â€Å"[†¦] a critical juncture of necessary unlearning and relearning. Adults and adolescents must all renegotiate their roles and relationships- roles and relationships informed not simply by entry into adolescence, but also by how adolescence is situated within multiple cultural, historical, and institutional settings† (13). Characteristics Of A Chromosomal Disorder Essay - 955 Words

A chromosomal disorder is caused by an abundance or reduction of genes on the chromosomes. This type of disorder may also be caused by structural changes within these chromosomes; this is known as an aneuploidy (Porth, 2015). The most common chromosomal disorder is Down syndrome of which there are three types: complete trisomy 21, translocation, and mosaicism (Porth, 2015). Since its first identification in 1866, researchers have become more knowledgeable about the etiology of Down syndrome. When one studies etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations of Down syndrome, he or she will begin to understand multiple chromosomal disorders. Typically, the nucleus of each cell stores forty-six chromosomes. Half of these chromosomes derive from each parent cell. However, in those with Down syndrome, the cells contain forty-seven chromosomes. Researchers’ knowledge of the etiology of Down syndrome has grown since it was first described in 1866 by John Langon Down (National Dow n Syndrome Society, 2012). According to the National Down Syndrome Association (2012), 95% of the Down syndrome cases are caused by a fault in cell division. Although it is clear that this disorder occurs because of an alteration during cell division, the cause as to why this occurs is unknown. However, the pathogenesis of this disorder is clear. The pathogenesis of this disorder begins with nondisjunction during meiosis, which is failure of the chromosomes to separate. Today, it is known that thereShow MoreRelatedGenetic Disease : Turner Syndrome1104 Words   |  5 PagesIn 1938, Dr. Henry Turner first described Turner Syndrome. A Comparison of Two Barbecue Restaurants Essay example

The Best Barbecue in the South Barbecue is one of my favorite foods. I have always enjoyed going into some greasy barbecue dive, listening to the blues, and feeling pretty cool. Two joints where I have eaten are Big Ds Piggy Strut Soul Pit Bar-B-Q in Clemson, South Carolina, and Hys Deli right across from the School campus. Even though both of these restaurants pride themselves on their barbecue, Big Ds is obviously the better. As I walked into the Piggy Strut for the first time, I immediately noticed the different atmosphere. The sign at the entrance said, Seat yourself if you want to eat here! This was nothing like eating at the Soul Pit. In my booth at Hys, I began to notice the decor. This place obviously had been decorated in the late 1930s. Besides the door-sized Marilyn Monroe poster, the only other ornamentation were posters of old western movies and the Bedtime for Breshnev poster featuring Ronald Reagan as a western ironman facing down the villainous Soviet premier. Big Ds was completely different. They had posters of rock groups, blues musicians, and famous pigs. I sat one afternoon at the Strut and read the posters for hours. At Hys I was sick of John Wayne after ten minutes. The obvious question in comparing two restaurants is which has the better food. The menu at Hys was pathetic. If you wanted to eat barbecue, you had to choose from only two selections: the sandwich plate and the barbecue plate. The first thing I noticed when the waitress brought out the food (besides her skin tight Chic jeans and the apron stolen from long John Silvers) was the extreme lack of barbecue. Both plates had plenty of potato salad, coleslaw, and curly-Q fries, but neither had enough barbecue to come close to filling me up. On the other hand, the Soul Pits menu was a three-pager. It ranged from the Big D side of pork and the Barbecue Chili to the Soul Pit Super Hot Beans and the Little D. The structure of the corporate governance is framed for the mere compliance with regulatory requirements (Beekes, Brown and Zhang 2015). The hard law which is the Australian Government has set the rules for the implementation of legislative requirement and introduced the Corporation Act 2001(Cth). Another part is soft law which is introduced for the listing rule in Australian Securities Exchange Limited (ASX) (Ali 2016). The non-binding guideline which is not officially in the corporate governance but it has been included in the ASX Corporate Governance Councils Principles and Recommendations (ASX Principles). The structure and framework of the corporate governance has been used in the company which helps to frame the corporate ethics and control the aspects of the corporate governance (Tricker and Tricker 2015). The current corporate governance has a designed frame work which is included in the characteristics of the organization (Anon, 2017). It has a particular regulation and liability of the directors who perform according to their duty of care (Beekes, Brown and Zhang 2015). It helps to structure the principal based system of governance where the institutional investors and strong investment structures has been framed (Sivathaasan 2016). Therefore it should be mentioned that the corporate governance is most important part for governing the company to maintain their own sovereign state according to their customs, policies, and laws (Ali 2016). The shareholders reorganization, stakeholders interests is the part of the corporate governance where board should maintain the responsibilities where it should be clearly mentioned (Anon, 2017). Under the corporate governance the ethical behavior is also important where it will affect the civil and legal obligations of the companys provide the good code of conducts in the company (Tricker and Tricker 2015). The business transparency is helped to promote the shareholders trusts while it helps to record the financial stabilities, earn the reports and other guidance in the corporate governance (Beekes, Brown and Zhang 2015). The corporate governance also use as risk mitigation while it promotes the executive effectively for the prevention of the corporate scandals, fraud and other civil and criminal liabilities also (Ali 2016). Therefore the corporate or the organization never runs the system without the application of the corporate governance (Tricker and Tricker 2015). It makes the corporate to make the effectiveness and keep it honest and out of every trouble because if it shares philosophy for break down the corporate governance then the company will be affective and the product outcomes will become defected for construct the management (Sivathaasan 2016). Most of the time the company has held liable for the failure of the corporate governance and the organization get corrupted (Ali 20 16). Therefore due to the fall of the gravity of the corporate governance, the ASX Corporate Governance Council affects the financial reports, criminal investigation and other bankrupts (Anon, 2017). Therefore the dishonest and unethical behavior make the bad affect towards the shareholders flee out of fear, distrust and disgust (Beekes, Brown and Zhang 2015). According to the corporate structure the organization make as standards of the ethics where it helps to operate the company according to the actual corporate governance (Tricker and Tricker 2015). It set a appropriate codes of ethical dilemma where it can maintain the good quality and standards of manufacturing which helps the corporation to keep maintain the good quality and companys reputation (Ali 2016). The structure of the board and their role and responsibilities helps the strategies, resources, performance, conformance and the accountabilities of the shareholders (Beekes, Brown and Zhang 2015). The ethical behavior is one of the important parts in the transparency of the business. The unethical behaviors never accepted in the corporate business premises because it will violate the constitution of the company which is will be not granted (Sivathaasan 2016). The misrepresentation and misconducts never helps the corporate to uplifts its values regarding the ethical decisions of t he company (Tricker and Tricker 2015). Therefore it is important to make a best structure through the application of the corporate governance (Beekes, Brown and Zhang 2015). In one of the case where the CPAs board of directors and CEO Alex Malle has makes the highlights when they introduced new corporate governance as per the ASX Code of Corporate governance (Sivathaasan 2016). They have replaced it with a new code which is included by stronger legislations (Ali 2016). When the governance applied in the corporation directly it will only allowed the commercial corporation lists o the exchange of the governance principal who uses the ethics. Therefore non-listed organizations never applied such ASX codes for the remuneration has make the corporation peers where the elected directors with on- executive independent directors should works according to the management or substantial shareholders (Tricker and Tricker 2015). The Rise and Fall of Napster free essay sample

Rise and fall of Anapest It started as an accident. Shawn Fanning was Just experimenting and thinking of an easier to go through a search engine for music. What was a simple Idea turned out to be a phenomenon in the Internet world. The creation of Anapest led to many problems and brought about new issues that involved the entertainment industry and piracy laws. Anapest is a software where a compilation of all of its users files are held in a central unit and each user is able to use its search engine to look for a song room another persons computer. The Issue surrounding this problem arose when the Recording Industry Association of America claimed that Anapest was basically giving out free music and was not paying the fees to issue free music. Anapest claimed that all the music was shared among its users and were shared from computer to computer rather than a free website issuing free files for all to download. We will write a custom essay sample on The Rise and Fall of Napster or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page With the innovation of new technologies today, new problems will always come up due to better ways of getting things done. The same Incident happened with the new and Improved VS..After sighting some battles, It was made legal for consumers to record from their own home and uses it for personal matters. Again, this situation is similar, but with more strings attached. Anapest was thought to be similar to the VS. problem, but with the piracy laws and the government still trying to find ways to regulate the Internet, it became a more difficult battle for Anapest to fight. Recording artists were losing money in the sales of compact discs and they were blaming It on the rise of file sharing. Although the radio does entertain the public with Its free music, they do have to pay the fees to lay the music. They make their money but advertisements and sponsors. Anapest used the excuse that people record off the radio for free, but they cannot burn the music they hear. What Anapest did not understand was that the music is offered free because the radio stations do pay for it, and they have the rights to issue the music at the level of their pleasure. Anapest was simply taking it from the artists and giving free music. This had an effect on both the consumers and producers of music. What turned out to be a result of the matter was that the prices of music were climbing and nonusers were not buying as much. They resorted to their computers to download for free and left the supply and demand chain hanging. Prices were increasing things such as the artists concerts so they can make up for their CD sales. Artists such as Metallic have suffered from this problem. They sued Anapest for copyright Infringement and were on their way to shut Anapest from Its services. Anapest was facing legal charges from both the artists and the music industry and that made it hard for them to fight the battle. They thought it was easy, but the judge ruled against Anapest. It seems as though Anapest was being socially irresponsible and were giving away freebies. What made it difficult for many to understand were the moral Issues Involved. Can we take away from the rich and give away to the common people? It could not have been thought as morally wrong, but the facts do support people for free from a click of a mouse. Not only would you then feel helpless, but also your work to make it possible is not recognize where you are not compensated for. Nowadays, many other software and websites have emerged with the same incept as Anapest.Win, Aziza, Morpheme, and many others are basically doing the same thing as Anapest, but they have not been shut down by the government. But what makes it ironic is that since Anapest is no longer a free service, others are still managing themselves as a free music website. Anapest was one of the first to take the big blow while others are taking more precautions where they will not suffer the same consequences. Many should realize that since the innovation file sharing, no matter what, people will continue to download music for free no matter what.It goes not make much difference if a group of people each bought a different CD and Net home and made copies for the rest of the group to have. That issue cannot be regulated and the music industry cannot do anything to stop that. The downside of file sharing brings in more problems such as viruses and hackers to many peoples computer systems. With the files being in a persons hard drive, the risk of downloading from another persons computer and acquiring a virus unknowingly is growing greater and greater. More people are able to get into a persons system and complete annihilate a persons hard drive.Even Internet security has become a major issue and identity theft is on the rise. Regulating such sites (including Anapest) is important to the consumer. The legal responsibilities of the music companies and the government are far greater than they had expected by ensuring the safety of the communities they serve. It started with Just music sharing and the ARIA suing MPH. Com and Anapest. What come next are the bigger files such as movies and video clips. Already in foreign countries where copyright laws do not exist pose a problem for American filmmakers. Now with the new equipment available, people can download copies of movies before it is released to the public for renting. The Motion Picture Association of America (MAMA) already sees this as a potential threat and is taking measures to inform the public about how this issue affects not only the actors, but also the entire entertainment industry. It is like a domino effect where it starts out as affecting a certain area and going down the chain taking a little bit from everyone else. The issue with Anapest was not Just an issue involving piracy laws. It started a new revolution in the booming business of technology. We are now living the information age rather than the industrial age. New ideas that come about are questioning the moral rights of everyone. Is what Anapest did okay with the public? The question is hard to answer because the Incident started a new wave of regulations the government and entertainment industry have to follow. Problems that many never thought could arise came up and the only way to fight them is by tackling the issues as they come. Anapest was Just the first one to take the first initial blow, but others who follow will take the safety measures when entering the market.
